Plastic: Revolution for Design + Art. Objects of the Winkler Collection

The Winkler Collection at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (museum of applied art) comprises more than 300 objects which are made entirely or partly from synthetic materials. There are only few objects made from these materials – so influential and seminal to the 20th century – that can be exhibited on a permanent basis. The museum will therefore present a carefully selected range of design objects which stand out in terms of cultural and historical significance, technical prowess as well as formal and aesthetic relevance. In addition, the exhibition will also present selected works of art where synthetics played an important role. The chronological tour of the exhibition first takes visitors to sombre bakelite objects from the early 20th century and thence to colourful, vivid contemporary exhibits made from semi-transparent synthetics.
