Snapshots - The Eye of the Century
26 September to 12 December 2004
“You press the button, we do the rest” was the slogan with which George Eastman advertised his box camera in 1888. All the photographer had to do was to press the button, wind the film on and send the whole thing in to be developed. He then received his prints and camera complete with a new film. This was the birth of the “snapshot” and photography in the private sphere began its unstoppable conquest of the world.
On the occasion of photokina the museum is showing 520 of these snapshots, one-off photographs of great value and original prints from the collection of Christian Skrein, one of the most comprehensive snapshot archives worldwide.
